Matl Findel, born in 1961 in the Allgäu region of Germany, is a Berlin-based filmmaker, photographer, and artist known for his innovative approach to short and experimental cinema. After working as a freelance photographer in Munich, Findel began his studies in communications, political science, and theater before enrolling at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB) in 1987. His early short film, "Das Blaue vom Himmel" (1992), received international recognition.

Findel’s graduation film, "Im Regen (tant pis)" (1994), won the German Film Critics’ Promotion Prize at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival and the Silver Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival. In 1994, he founded his own production company, Matl Findel Film, and went on to create numerous short and experimental films, including "Mitte Mai" (1995) and "Heimweh (always)" (2015), the latter awarded Best Experimental Short Film at the 2016 International Short Film Festival in Kyiv.

Beyond directing, screenwriting, and cinematography, Findel has also produced experimental video works and installations. Since the 2000s, he has taught at film and art schools in Berlin and Los Angeles.
