Villa Aurora & Thomas Mann House (VATMH) Los Angeles is a non-profit organization in Pacific Palisades. Villa Aurora is an artists residence located in the former home of exiled author Lion Feuchtwanger. The Thomas Mann House is a residence for scholars addressing fundamental issues in politics, society, and culture. The organization promotes intercultural exchange through a variety of interdisciplinary programs and is primarily funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.

Project Coordinator (m/f/d) full-time

Project Coordinator (m/f/d) full-time for Villa Aurora & Thomas Mann House Los Angeles

Start Date: March 1, 2024, or earlier

Are you an organizational talent, communicative and enjoy working with people in an intercultural environment? As a project coordinator, you will make a valuable contribution to our program work and the projects of our fellows.

You will be based at the Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles with occasional assignments to the Villa Aurora.

What you can expect

Communication & Events

  • You will support public relations by maintaining and creating content for the website and write news bulletins, previews and reviews. You will support communication in the digital space by preparing and evaluating content for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Medium and YouTube.
  • You maintain our contact databases, send out invitations and newsletters (Clever Reach) and support event communication (RSVP management tool such as Eventbrite, etc.).
  • You will participate in organizing and executing events in the Thomas Mann House, such as setting up and dismantling seating and technology, reception, guest assistance, catering and coordination of service providers (technology, photographers, catering, etc.).
  • You will take care of daily administrative tasks (minutes, appointment coordination, filing, telephone, etc.), responding to external inquiries and conducting guided tours of the Thomas Mann House.
  • You manage and archive files and media (photos, film recordings, etc.) and process them (e.g. editing video clips, subtitling, photo editing).

Fellow support

  • You are the contact person for the Fellows' day-to-day practical concerns (transport services, doctor's visits, setting up library cards, etc.) and support them in project implementation (travel organization, minor content-related research, etc.).
  • Acting as a representative for the Program Director during his absence.

Property management

  • Oversight of basic maintenance tasks in consultation with VATMH administrative leadership.
  • Point of contact for craftsmen, technicians, cleaning staff and garden service in coordination with VATMH administrative management

Requirements:

  • You are fluent in both German and English, spoken and written.
  • You have a valid work permit in the USA.
  • You are professional, friendly and discreet demeanor when dealing with high-profile individuals from science, politics and culture.
  • You have digital skills in handling hardware and software (Photoshop basics, Premiere Pro basics, Content Management Software, etc.).
  • Willingness to work on evenings and weekends (approximately 4-5 events per month, some on weekends

Salary and Benefits:

  • A salary grouped in accordance with grade G7, step 1
  • 27 paid vacation days, 13 statutory holidays per calendar year

The Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles aims to create a lively place for transatlantic debate, where outstanding personalities explore fundamental political, social and cultural issues of the present and future in exchange with each other and with the host country. Fellowships and events facilitate these encounters and intellectual exchange. Various media formats give personalities from Germany and the USA a voice and bring them into an open dialog with a broad public. The Thomas Mann House takes into account the diversity of the German immigration society.

The Villa Aurora promotes German-American cultural exchange as an artist residency and a place for international cultural encounters. As a house of remembrance, it keeps alive the memory of the artists and intellectuals who found refuge in California during the National Socialist era and had a significant influence on cultural life on the American West Coast.

Internship

Villa Aurora & Thomas Mann House e. V. offers three-month internship opportunites in Los Angeles to advanced students.

Please note that internships are usually assigned at least one year in advance. As a general rule we cannot consider applications submitted on short notice.

INTERNSHIP

  • Interns gain insight into the work of an international cultural institution.
  • Interns assist resident artists with research and project implementation.
  • Interns are involved in planning and organizing cultural events.
  • Interns support the staff by assisting with administrative tasks.
  • Interns conduct guided tours.
  • Interns receive an expense allowance of $1000.00 and free accommodations at Villa Aurora.
  • Most applicants will require to obtain a J-1 visa processed by CIEE, www.college-council.de.
  • The application and processing of a J1-visa result in costs of around 1100 €. Villa Aurora is able to offer financial assistance if needed.

After completion of the internship, interns have to submit a final report to the office in Los Angeles.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum age for applicants is 21
  • Only advanced students may apply
  • Studies in an academic field associated with VATMH's activities
  • Very good command of English
  • Outstanding social competence
