Gisela Weimann

Gisela Weimann, born in 1943 in Bad Blankenburg, is an internationally recognized German artist based in Berlin. Her multifaceted practice encompasses painting, printmaking, photography, film, mail art, installations, multimedia projects, actions, performances, and art in public spaces. Weimann is known for consistently crossing geographic, artistic, and disciplinary boundaries, collaborating with artists from theater, music, and film, as well as with scholars from various fields.
After her foundational training in Münster and Bremen, Weimann studied painting at the Berlin University of the Arts, graduating as a master student in 1971. She continued her studies in printmaking and experimental photography at the Royal College of Art in London as a DAAD scholar and later completed a BA in film and photography at the San Francisco Art Institute as a Fulbright and Airlift Memorial Fellow. Her career has been shaped by extended periods of study, teaching, and artistic work abroad, including residencies in Mexico, Los Angeles, Venice, and Istanbul.
Weimann’s work has been exhibited internationally and honored with numerous awards, including the Critics’ Prize for Visual Art from the Association of German Critics (2002), the GEDOK Catalogue Prize, and various artist residencies. Her practice is deeply informed by political and social engagement, with a particular emphasis on feminist themes and the relationship between art, war, violence, and memory.
Weimann is a member of several artists’ associations and remains committed to fostering connections between art, society, and intercultural exchange.
