Freedom from Fear – A Transatlantic Dialogue on the Human Right to a Life Without Fear
The fourteen-part video series “Freedom from Fear,” created by Berlin-based directors Florian Giefer and Peter Göltenboth (pet&flo directors), brings together reflections from renowned artists, writers, philosophers, and scholars from Los Angeles and Germany on the human right to live free from fear. The first six episodes premiered in March 2021, projected onto the façade of STUDIO Я at the Maxim Gorki Theater, while simultaneously launching online on the Villa Aurora & Thomas Mann House YouTube channel.
Inspired by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s vision of “freedom from fear” as a foundation for self-determined lives, the series addresses pressing issues such as the pandemic, the climate crisis, and social transformation. Contributors-including Felicitas Hoppe, Sam Durant, Sasha Waltz, Rosa Barba, Peter Sellars, Martha Nussbaum, and James Conlon-explore how art, literature, dance, music, philosophy, and politics can offer pathways out of collective anxiety.
