Wiebke Loeper: Falsche Fische

About the Artwork

Wiebke Loeper sends her large-scale Falsche Fische swimming through the city. Yet, as effortlessly as the school of fish glides along, a closer look reveals all too clearly that it is an illusion. Neither the vibrant blue water nor the fish themselves are what they pretend to be. Falsche Fische swim right among us. They shimmer in the light, appearing familiar and full of promise—yet appearances are deceptive. Much like "false friends" in language, they feign a closeness that does not actually exist. Our contemporary world is complex, and simplification is often seductive. These images invite us to continuously sharpen our own perception.

About the Project

As part of Art in the City, Villa Aurora will bring artistic works in the form of large-format art posters to the urban space of Cottbus and the Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art from October 16, 2026 to January 10, 2027.

Fellows of the Villa Aurora & Thomas Mann House e. V., an organization active in Germany and the United States, have created works that explore the location, social issues, and the accessibilty of art. Displayed in public spaces—on billboards and advertising spaces—these artworks can be encountered by a broad audience, sometimes quite by chance.

Art in the City in Cottbus is a project of the Villa Aurora &Thomas Mann House in cooperation with the Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art.
