Lisa Schmitz

Lisa Schmitz (born 1952 in Emmerich) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Berlin. She studied sculpture, performance, and art education at the Kunstakademie Münster and the Hochschule der Künste Berlin, earning her Meisterschülerin degree. Schmitz also pursued studies in art history, philosophy, ethnology, Romance studies, and textile design in Heidelberg, Clermont-Ferrand, New Orleans, Cologne, Münster, and Berlin. Postgraduate studies took her to Moscow, and she later completed training in multimedia production in Berlin. During her academic career, she received several scholarships and awards.

Schmitz has taught at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin and the Technical University of Berlin, held guest professorships at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf, the University of Giessen, MARchI Moscow, and ICA Moscow, and lectured at the Bauhaus College in Dessau.

Since 1993, her artistic practice has focused on spatial installations, environments, urban interventions, interpassive and inter-contemplative communication projects, and photographic series. Central to her work are the themes of humanity, space, time, technology, and communication. Schmitz’s projects particularly examine human behavior in the emerging information age, exploring fascination, fears, and hopes in the face of a shifting scientific worldview.
