Frieder Haller, born in Freiburg im Breisgau, completed the postgraduate program at De Ateliers, Amsterdam, and studied photography (B.F.A.) at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. He held residencies at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris and at Stadtgalerie Bern. He lives and works in Cologne. Alongside his artistic practice, he has co-initiated and co-directed several exhibition spaces: Belle Air in Essen, Root Canal in Amsterdam, Cittipunkt in Berlin, and, since 2023, Die Verabredung in Cologne.
Haller’s experimental films examine the structures and dynamics of interpersonal relationships and the power relations that emerge from them. His work repeatedly puts cinematic conventions to the test and subverts them, for instance through looping and non-linear narrative structures.

During his residency in Los Angeles, Frieder Haller will research the history of special effects as a cinematic technique. He is particularly interested in the special effect as a political technology of illusion-making that has profoundly shaped traditional narrative cinema. The project will result in an experimental short film focusing on the historical technique of matte painting.

Frieder Haller is a Villa Aurora Fellow of KunstSalon Köln.
