Birgit Möller
FilmBirgit Möller (born July 4, 1972, in Osnabrück, Germany) is an acclaimed German cinematographer, screenwriter, and director whose work spans feature films, television, and commercial projects. After an apprenticeship at the State College for Optics and Photo Technology in Berlin, she studied camera and directing at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB) from 1997 to 2006. Möller first gained recognition in 2003 when she and Ulrike von Ribbeck won the First Steps Award in the commercial category for their Nike spot “Heiser 1–3”.
Her feature directorial debut, Valerie (2006), a drama about the downward spiral of a former top model, premiered as her graduation film and received international acclaim, winning awards at several festivals and securing a theatrical release in Germany. Möller has since worked extensively as a cinematographer, contributing to both fiction and documentary projects, including Die Boxerin (2005), Tangerine (2008)-for which she received the Best Cinematography award at the achtung berlin festival-Das schlafende Mädchen (2011), and Von Mädchen und Pferden (2014).
Her most recent feature, the whimsical tragicomedy Franky Five Star (2023), premiered at the Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival, where it was honored with the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury. The film, which explores the inner world of a young woman and her alter egos, was also screened internationally and garnered further accolades.
In addition to her film work, Möller has directed commercials for clients such as Miele and VW, music videos, and has contributed to television series including Big Countdown and Ein Fall für zwei. She lives and works in Berlin.
