Call for applications: Thomas Mann Fellowships 2027

by Thomas Mann House

The Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles is a vibrant space for transatlantic debate, where outstanding personalities and thought leaders explore fundamental political, social, and cultural issues of today and the future, in dialogue with each other and with the host country, the United States.

For 2027, fellowships will be offered on the theme “The Power of Narratives.” The focus is on the role narratives—from myths and memories to art and politics—play in shaping our world and its future. How do they shape identity, give meaning to experiences, influence our understanding of justice, and open paths for social change? How are today’s cultural, social, and political narratives evolving, and what role do new media, technological developments, and our understanding of democracy and the public sphere play? And: how can narratives be creatively used to build inclusive communities for the future?

The Fellowship targets thought leaders, intellectuals, scientists from all disciplines, innovators, creatives, and outstanding personalities that contribute to societal debates and developments.

  • Junior Fellowships: For emerging figures with established public visibility.
  • Senior Fellowships: For accomplished leaders with broad public recognition and international acclaim in their respective fields.

About the Thomas Mann House

As a residence of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Thomas Mann House is dedicated to preserving and advancing the legacy of Thomas Mann. During his exile in the United States, Mann grappled with critical issues such as the roots of fascism, democratic renewal, freedom, migration, and exile. In this spirit, the Thomas Mann House addresses today’s most pressing challenges through its interdisciplinary fellowship program.
