Daniel Smutny studied with Hans Zender and Bernhard Kontarsky. By age 27, he debuted at the Donaueschingen Music Festival and the Bayrischen Rundfunks musica viva. He has won numerous prestigious awards such as the Stuttgart Composition Prize, the BMW Composition Prize and the Busoni Prize of the Academy of Arts.

Performances and commissioned works include SWR-Vokalenensemble, WDR, Ultraschall-Festival Berlin, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, Oper Stuttgart, Festspielhaus des Europäischen Zentrums der Künste, MDR-Sinfonieorchester, and the ECLAT-Festival SWR. Smutny’s works have been interpreted by artists such as: Hans Zender, Marcus Creed, Klangforum Vienna, SWR-Sinfonieorchester, Ensemble Modern and Christopher Hinterhuber. Smutny’s complete works have been published by the International music publisher Hans Sikorski.
