Villa Aurora & Thomas Mann House e. V. offers three-month internship opportunites in Los Angeles or Berlin to advanced students. It is also possible to apply for a combined internship (three months in Berlin followed by three months in Los Angeles or vice versa).

Please note that internships are usually assigned at least one year in advance. As a general rule we cannot consider applications submitted on short notice.

  • Interns gain insight into the work of an international cultural institution.
  • Interns assist resident artists with research and project implementation.
  • Interns are involved in planning and organizing cultural events.
  • Interns support the staff by assisting with administrative tasks.
  • Interns conduct guided tours.
  • Interns receive an expense allowance of $385.00 and free accommodations at Villa Aurora.
  • Most applicants will require to obtain a J-1 visa, resulting in costs of around 1100 €. Villa Aurora’s partner CIEE,, handles this process.

After completion of the internship, interns have to submit a final report to the offices in Los Angeles and Berlin.

Internships in Berlin are only offered once a year, from mid-April to mid-July. Berlin interns focus on preparing for and providing support during the selection process, as well as on event management.

Internship in Berlin

  • Interns gain insight into the work of an international cultural institution.
  • Interns review and applications for fellowship awarded for the following year and prepare the material for the juries.
  • Interns create a statistical breakdown of applicants.
  • Interns assist in the preparation and implementation of jury meetings.
  • Interns assist with follow-up, evaluation and review of the selection process.
  • Interns maintain the fellow database and are responsible for statistical evaluations.
  • Interns assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of cultural programs.
  • Interns help with administrative tasks.

Berlin interns receive a monthly expense allowance of Euro 330.00.
