Mathieu Bertholet graduated from the playwriting program at the UdK Berlin. For his first piece Farben, he received the 2001 Award of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg and the Prix Europa 2009.

From 2006-2009, Mathieu Bertholet was in-house author at the Théâtre du Grütli in Geneva. During this engagement, he also performed as a dancer in solos by Cindy van Acker and Foofwa D'Imobilité, and founded his own company mufuthe which premiered his works. Bertholet also teaches playwriting at the ENSATT in Lyon and is director of studies at the drama school La Manufacture in Lausanne. He directed his play L'avenir, seulement at the Théâtre de Gennevilliers in Paris.
